Three Categories of Debt

Debt falls into three categories:

  • Priority debt: This is debt that has to be paid, bankruptcy or no bankruptcy. It includes delinquent child support payments, tax debt that is fewer than three years old, and a few other debts.
  • Unsecured debt: This is debt that is not attached to a specific piece of property. Unsecured debt includes credit card debt, medical bills and more.
  • Secured debt: This is debt attached to some form of collateral that the creditor can reclaim if the debt is not paid. Secured debt includes mortgage debt, car loans and more. This debt must be paid in order to retain the collateral.
